Keynote Presentation: “Herding Tigers: Be the Leader That Creative People Need,” by Todd Henry, Founder, The Accidental Creative

Managers in creative fields often got the job because they were good at being makers–and learned to strategize their time, relationships, and mindset to produce the best creative work possible on their own. But when they’re put in charge, the rules change, and they must unlearn their hard-won working habits in favor of new ones, and navigate a minefield of complex relational dynamics with colleagues and bosses.

Successful leaders of creative teams have mastered the difficult transition from doing the work to leading the work, and this talk shows how. Todd Henry picks up where The Accidental Creative left off, and provides an indispensable look at on-the-ground, tactical advice for managers of creative people. He draws from interviews with brilliant leaders and his experience consulting in creative organizations to share a wealth of practical advice, including:

Todd Henry teaches leaders and organizations how to establish practices that lead to everyday brilliance. "Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics: Current Trends in the Legal Industry," by Nola Vanhoy, Senior Director, Legal Technology Innovation, Alston and Bird LLP

The legal industry press has articles every day on artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and many more buzz phrases and how these technologies will impact the legal profession. It is difficult to separate the “hype” from what is actually developing in the legal industry and is proving to have value. Nola Vanhoy, Senior Director, Legal Technology Innovation at Alston & Bird, will be giving a presentation on artificial intelligence and data analytics and discuss new tools and technologies that are proving useful for legal practice both today and in the near future.

Nola Vanhoy, Senior Director, Legal Technology Innovation, Alston and Bird LLP

Nola Vanhoy is the Senior Director of Legal Technology Innovation at Alston & Bird and serves as the senior executive leader for the firm’s overall Knowledge Management and Legal Technology Innovation function. Ms. Vanhoy works with firm leadership and attorneys to develop innovative strategies, drive initiatives, and promote and monitor the use and effectiveness of the firm’s knowledge management and legal technology systems and services. Nola also co-directs the firm’s Legal Project Management initiative and facilitates after matter reviews for client teams within the firm. Before attending law school, Nola worked as an engineering special librarian and also as a planning analyst in the corporate setting. After law school, Nola practiced law in Georgia and began working for Kutak Rock LLP. At Kutak Rock, Nola managed a group of trainers, librarians, knowledge specialists and business development communications specialists as the Director of Knowledge Services. Nola received her B.A. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and both her J.D. and M.S.L.S. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Nola is an active member of the Georgia Bar, is former Chair of the Legal Division of the Special Libraries Association, is a founding steering committee member of the ILTA Knowledge Management SIG, served as founding member and Chair of the Lex Mundi Knowledge Management Committee, is a member of the Association of Legal Administrators and is past-chair of the Knowledge Management Section of the Atlanta Legal Administrators Association.

“Kissing Frogs - Looking for a Prince,” by James B. Gillespie, CPA, CLM, Executive Administrator/CFO, Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP and Jay B. Gillespie, MBA, Controller, Hall Booth Smith, P.C.

As firms seek to grow their firm or even replace their existing “rainmakers” they are faced with the challenge of “how do I know whether to hire a lateral partner that is being presented to us?” This session explores the key elements of assessing whether a lateral partner candidate is a “fit” for your firm. It also identifies the ways to reduce your firm’s financial risk once extending an offer is deemed appropriate. The session includes a outline of the key elements to consider, as well as a “mock interview” of a lateral candidate with “red flags” (and “green flags”) articulated throughout the interview. This session is most beneficial to participants serving in the role of Firm Administrator, CFO, COO, or that actively participate in the process of assessing/interviewing/advising senior firm management in the hiring of lateral Partners with “books” of portable client business.

James Gillespie, CPA, CLM

James is a financial executive with a wide variety of corporate and law firm experience. He started his career in public accounting, then served as CFO for seven companies (public and private) before joining us in “law firm world”. Joining Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP as Executive Administrator & CFO in 2001, the firm has grown from 10 offices to a national footprint of over 25 offices, through lateral hiring. He is an active member of ALA and particularly enjoys mentoring our members in their pursuit of the CLM certification.

Jay Gillespie, MBA

Jay serves as the Controller for Hall Booth Smith, P.C., a full-service law firm with 15 locations strategically located across the southeast. His career includes over six years of public accounting experience, two years of internal auditing experience focusing on business process improvement, two years of diverse income tax and treasury management experience, plus four years of senior financial management experience. He began his career at Deloitte and has worked with both publicly traded and private equity owned businesses. His international assignments have taken him to numerous European countries, China, Hong Kong and Mexico.

“Implementation of the Team LPA Model,” by Todd Speir, Manager of Paralegal and Legal Support Services, King & Spalding LLP

Legal Support Transformation Part 2 by Todd Speir at King & Spalding. Last year, Part 1 discussed how to develop the right support model for your firm. This year, Todd will discuss how King & Spalding finished implementing the team support model and what were the challenges and wins encountered with both staff and attorneys. How was the transition to the team support model and did it have an impact on the firm’s renovation plan?

Todd Speir, Manager of Paralegal and Legal Support Services, King & Spalding LLP

Todd M. Speir is a Manager of Paralegal and Legal Support Services with King & Spalding. In this capacity, he manages over 65 paralegals and project assistants in the firm’s Atlanta and Charlotte offices. Additionally, he oversees 54 legal practice assistants in Atlanta. Prior to becoming paralegal manager in 2014, Mr. Speir had over 20 years of experience as a trial litigation paralegal and participated in trials in state and federal courts in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1993 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Additionally, he obtained a Paralegal Certificate from The National Center for Paralegal Training in 1994. Mr. Speir currently serves on the Advisory Board for Clayton State University’s ABA-approved Paralegal Program. He recently served as the Chapter Chair for the Southern Region of the International Practice Management Association.

Mr. Speir is married to Melissa Speir, a fellow UGA graduate, and has two children, a freshman at the University of Georgia and a sophomore at North Atlanta High School. When not in the office, Todd enjoys many outdoor activities, including cycling, hiking and paddling.

AALA is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta to collect school supplies and other items needed for kids as they return to school. Donations of actual supplies can be brought to the E2E event on August 17th. Monetary donations can be made online or brought to E2E. All monetary donations will be used to purchase additional supplies.

A raffle ticket will be awarded for each $25 donation. AALA will award a prize at the end of the E2E event on August 17th to the winning raffle ticket.
